| Description: |
Dr. Albert B. Ferguson, Jr. celebrates his 90th Birthday on June 10. In 1953, during the brace-and-buckle days of orthopaedics, a young Harvard-trained orthopaedic surgeon arrived in Pittsburgh and was appointed the third chairman of orthopaedic surgery. “Ferg”, as he was lovingly nicknamed by legions of residents, assumed the chairmanship of a department that had no training program. Dr. Ferguson established the orthopaedic residency program and was the first recipient of the David Silver Endowed Chair. When he arrived from Boston his specialty was treating children with dislocated hips and, as a surgical innovator, he pioneered the use of titanium and other durable materials for hip and knee replacements. Dr. Ferguson founded our first orthopaedic research laboratory that attracted a group of distinguished researchers including Drs. George Bentley, Henry Mankin, Tom Brown, Bob Greer, Dana Mears, Bill Green, and Chris Evans. He was the team orthopaedic surgeon of the Pittsburgh Pirates and, in 1975, was President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and, in1976, held the prestigious office of President of the American Orthopaedic Association. However, he is most proud of the orthopaedic surgeons that he trained. Over the course of 34 years “Ferg” trained many surgeons who went on to become department heads and chairmen of orthopaedic departments both in the US and abroad. Dr. Ferguson retired in 1986. |
