Venkat Seshadri, MD, Christian H. Coyle, PhD and Constance R. Chu, MD wrote the lead article in Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery in the April 2009 Issue, “Lidocaine Potentiates the Chondrotoxicity of Methylprednisolone”.
Drs. Kopf, Musahl, Tashman, Szczodry, Shen and Fu Lead Article in Knee Surgery Sports Traumatology Arthroscopy. This study examined the viability of bovine articular chondrocytes after exposure to methylprednisolone and lidocaine, the combination of which is widely used in clinical practice. The results demonstrate a dose- and time- dependent decrease in chondrocyte viability after exposure to clinically relevant doses of methylprednisolone, and the methylprednisolone/lidocaine combination. This paper won the AANA Resident/Fellow Essay Award- Basic Science 2008.
